MESSAGE

from the Chief Executive, Edmund Ho Hau Wah

It has been a year since Macau returned to the Motherland and became a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.

With the full support of the Central Government and efforts of all walks of life of Macau, the policies of "One Country, Two Systems", "Macau People Administering Macau" and a high degree of autonomy have successfully withstood all tests in the first year. The Basic Law of the Macau Special Administrative Region has comprehensively been put into practice. The SAR Government rules by law and social life functions normally. It is encouraging that Macau has made the first fundamental and significant stride in its new era.

This Photo Album summarizes the major events that happened in the first year of the establishment of the Macau SAR and also shows our hard work and efforts.

As I have pledged in my 2001 Policy Address, my staff and I will continue to work for the benefit of the Macau people, and to promote and enforce policies and measures for the construction of a better Macau.

The destiny of Macau is closely linked with the development of our Motherland. The development of the western part of China and the accession of China to the World Trade Organization (WTO) will bring precious opportunities to Macau and lift the economy of the SAR to ever high levels.

I strongly believe that under the policy of "One Country, Two Systems", Macau people can efficiently administer and build Macau. A harmonious and stable social environment and a bright future of Macau will be created and maintained if we all unite together and dedicate ourselves to the general benefit of the SAR and our Motherland.
